What is a Dental Bridge?

A Dental Bridge, also known as a fixed partial denture, is a dental restoration used to replace one or more missing teeth in the same area. It does this by permanently joining to adjacent natural teeth or dental implants next to the teeth being treated. There are many different types of dental bridges available, depending on how the bridge is fabricated and how the bridge anchors onto the adjacent teeth. Dental Bridges are most commonly made by being fabricated outside of the mouth in a dental lab and cemented in afterwards.

What is the Process of Getting Dental Bridge?

Dental Bridges are fabricated by first reducing the teeth on either side of the missing tooth (or teeth). The two anchoring teeth are called the abutment teeth. The abutment teeth are reduced in size and appropriately shaped in order to accommodate the material being used for the dental bridge. It is important that the abutment is in correct alignment and contact with the opposing teeth. The false teeth that are made are called pontics, and they can be made from gold, metal alloys, Zirconia or a combination of these materials.

Once the teeth are prepared, an impression is taken and sent off to a lab for processing. To protect your teeth and to make sure you do not feel uncomfortable with any missing teeth, a custom temporary bridge will be made for you to wear while the final bridge is being processed. Once the final bridge is returned, the temporary bridge will be removed, and the final bridge will be permanently cemented into place.

What are the Benefits of a Dental Bridge?

A Dental Bridge restores your teeth function and maintains your smile aesthetics, but it also prevents the surrounding teeth from drifting out of position. Additionally, it fills the spaces that would otherwise have left the surrounding teeth susceptible to tooth decay. This is why a dental bridge may be an excellent treatment option.

Who is a Good Candidate for a Dental Bridge?

The best candidate for a dental bridge is a person with one or more missing teeth and good dental hygiene. Special attention to hygiene at home will need to be taken, especially flossing under the bridge. Furthermore, dental visits, including professional hygiene appointments, should be completed every six months.
